Yr2 Week 11: Final Sentry Gun Model

The final week of the first term, it's gone so quickly! For this week my aim was to have my model completely baked and textured, ready to be animated after Christmas.

Below show some images of my final renders from different angles.

My texture consisted of one diffuse, one normal and one metalness map. The metalness map was important to show a contrast between the gun barrel and pivot against the stone of the lion, so I thought it was important to use metalness for my third texture rather than roughness

I found the normal map from to be quite helpful for making my diffuse, as it showed exactly where I had put all of the features such as eyes, nose and contours in the body and face, allowing me to paint over these and highlight them further. The texture is a very simple greyscale texture which I added some moss detailing to.

After finishing the texture I started creating a podium, sort of.. My sentry gun is already on a stand, so I decided I'd make a little scene which shows the setting my sentry gun would be in, which consists of basic steps and a little temple enterance. The stretch goal allows us to create extra assets as long as they remain within 3,000 tris and use one 1024x1024 bit targa sheet. I am not sure how I will achieve this yet, as I made quite a large scene and was hoping to use tileable textures for the steps and building seperately but I wont be able to do this unfortunately, so I will have to see what I can come up with for now.

First Term Evaluation

Over all I think the first term has gone quite well; I completed my first group project and sucessfully made a scene with my group in Unreal Engine, I learnt how to use physical based rendering and I also taught myself how to use ZBrush, along with how to bake down normals from high poly to low poly.

Although I have learnt a lot, I think a lot of my work took quite a long time to produce, as I am quite a perfectionist and have used a lot of trial and error to produce my assets, often changing things and redoing things many times. But I think that this is all part of the process, and I am sure as time progresses I will become faster with all of these procedures as I become more familiar with them.

This term has definitely been very useful, and I hope the rest of the year continues in a similar way, I am planning to continue to push myself further to learn even more about other programmes, and hope to push to learn how to create clothes and better character models as much as possible.
