During my time at Jagex Ltd working as an intern QA Analyst, I was given the opportunity to model three off-hand weapons which would be high-tier monster drops for the MMORPG RuneScape. Although I finished my internship a few months ago now, the weapons have only just been released, and I am excited to be able to talk about them on my blog.
The weapons were to match already existing armour in the game, and as I did not have a long time to create the weapons (about a day), I didn't make a concept and decided to rather do a 3D model bash and put many peices together from different existing weapons whilst sampling the colours and textures from the armour sets in which they were to match.
As well as modelling the weapons, I also had the task of implementing them into the game! I created small inventory icons and even put together the configs in the script editor, plugging all of the models into engine and naming them appropriately, I then learnt how to pack them into the game and test them on a test stream.
Whilst I would have liked to have spend a little more time first concepting these, I belive they came out quite nicely considering my very short time frame and fit their purpose in RuneScape quite well. It was a very good experience to be able to witness first hand the process taken to create these assets and then actually implement them myself into the game, and I am very greatful my team was able to find the time to teach me this process and allow me to do this, I have learnt a lot from this experience which I definitely wasn't aware of from my University course, most likely as there is no set process, but it is very useful to have this industry pipeline knowledge and experience.
This slideshow shows the Defenders all individually in a little more detail.
